If this was another 00s character platformer-Polly Platypus’ Wet and Wild World or whatever-it would be a cult classic and we’d all be pissed Nintendo hadnt rereleased it for switch yet. You get as high here-and as good of a sense of that height, as you do in an Assassin’s Creed game (and those didn’t release until a full generation later.) And of course the non FLUDD platforming is so good they expanded it into two whole masterpieces.Īll in all, I think if this wasn’t a Mario game it would be remembered more fondly. FLUDD is a clever gimmick, and it adds a pleasing verticality that wasn’t totally there in games yet. This game was designed around the GameCube’s unique pad, and the lack of pressure sensitive triggers and ability to lock the left stick in a groove are sorely missed.Īll that said I still enjoyed big chunks of the game. Id imagine my enjoyment of the game would have increased significantly simply without having to spend so much time in that damn hotel.įinally, I had a bizarrely hard time finding the hotel and the final level.Īs others have said, the switch release is definitely made a bit worse by the controller. No other 3D Mario forces you to stay in a level that’s too hard/annoying in that way. Locking the level progression behind getting all shines in a level is a terrible choice. Collect the red coins, collect the blue coins, etc. It also suffers from some late period “collectathon” repetition. The hotel level is an absolute nightmare as a result, maybe the worst, least polished thing I’ve ever found in a Mario game. There’s a lot of good there, but also a lot of bad.Īs you say, the camera is rough. I finished it, though I didn’t get 100%, last year for the first time. I played it for the first time around 2007, and just petered out around the amusement park level. There’s no question that Sunshine is the weakest 3D Mario game to me. I do really appreciate the non Fludd platforming levels though, those are great and I almost wish that was the game instead It’s a shame though because when it’s good, it’s really good, but it usually isn’t. Otherwise, some of the shines are incredibly frustrating and require an unnessary amount of work, the controls are no where near as smooth as in other games, it’s weirdly punishing, and it’s pretty badly paced. The Fludd idea is cool and the setting is one of the best settings, but I think the game only gets by on those two things alone. It’s hard for me to compare Mario 64 since that was my first Nintendo game, and Sunshine, which I only completed about a year ago, but I feel like Sunshine is an ok game but definitely doesn’t live up to Mario standards otherwise. If I remember correctly it was pretty rushed for the GameCube and I think that shows. I think the reason you never really read criticism of Mario Sunshine is because most people don’t talk about it. I rarely ever hear criticism of the game. I’m surprised I feel this way about the game as many people have great things to say about it. There have to be less levels and the levels all feel really small in comparison. The game is really well designed visually and the levels generally were pretty good, but the game felt smaller than SM64. I think the game overall was a good game, but in my opinion it was one of the worse mainline mario games. I was excited to play it on the all star collection as I didn’t have many memories of it. I played this game when I was a teen and I know I beat it. I got the 8 shines in each stage and finished the bowser fight last night, and I’m not leaving the game is find impressions. There were plenty of times where I over or under jumped. There was something about the camera angle which made it really hard to gauge how far you were moving. In SM64 you could switch to mario view to get around this issue. It would often get stuck on invisible walls. But I found Sunshine yo have a much more frustrating camera. I often hear that SM64 is frustrating due to the camera. Please use flair to display what games you’re currently playing, not a punch line, username, tag, URL, or signature.
